How to play
The solitaire version of Mah Jongg is a game of matching
pairs of tiles.
A stack of tiles lies on the table and it
is necessary to match similar pairs in order to remove
them from the stack.
The game is complete when all the
tiles have been removed, clearing the table.
It is only possible to remove two matching tiles if they are
"free". A free tile is one which has nothing touching its
left or right side.
From the main menu click on "Play a Game".
When you begin you will see the complete stack of tiles. Use the
mouse to move over the tiles - if a tile is selectable, it will be highlighted with a black outline. When you see a pair of matching
tiles, highlight one of them by clicking on it. This will cause your selected tile to be
given an orange outline. Repeating this procedure for the second tile
will cause them both to be removed. Having cleared a space you will
probably now have caused more tiles to become free, but be careful
with your planning as the wrong choices can leave you stuck!
If you try to remove a pair of non-matching tiles, the bold outline
will disappear from the first tile and will shift to the new tile.
You will then have to select a second tile again.
OptionsFrom the main menu, click on "Options". Here you can cycle through the different tile styles and board layouts avaliable (full version only!).
The sound and music volumes may also be adjusted (except on Windows NT4, where audio is disabled).
Tile modeDuring a game, press the "Tiles" button to see which tiles may be matched in the current tile set.
Press "Back" to return to your game. Additional help can be found here using the "Prev" and "Next" buttons,
these screens are also accessible from the main menu by clicking "How To Play".
Hint ModeDuring a game, press the "Hint" button once and each pair of matching tiles will
flash up twice, in turn, so that you may view all of your
options. Simply highlight any tile during the hint mode
process to interrupt the hint mode and return to the game.
